The DS is famous for its hydropneumatic self-leveling suspension, which Citroen was the first to introduce in 1954. The dashboard of the DS is equipped with a five-position lever which allows the driver to select whether the car would travel with the body in a high or low position. When the engine is turned off, the suspension slowly loses pressure until the car rests on the rubber bump stops. When the engine is restarted it rises back to its pre-selected height.
Because of its comfortable ride and modern beauty, the Citroen was popular with heads of state and French royalty. The DS came in third in the 1999 Car of the Century competition, recognizing the world’s most influential auto designs, and was named the most beautiful car of all time by Classic & Sports Car magazine.
